Of Voting and Politics

The reason that I vote singularly and entirely upon moral issues is simple. If our nation is in right standing with God, then we need not worry about things such as foreign relations - God will protect us and keep us in right standing. We need not worry about economic policies - the Lord will keep our economy stable. Indeed, we don't need to worry about anything, because we have found perfect peace with the Creator, Yahweh, Almighty God, and He is the one who raises up kings and lowers them down. And ultimately, Jesus Christ is the King of this world, and of the increase of His government there shall be no end.

Now, I understand that this is a double-edged sword, and that we not only need a righteous ruler, but we also need the people of this nation to turn in repentance and ask God for forgiveness as well. But I guarantee you, a righteous-standing President is a step in the right direction, and although no candidate is perfect, I must act upon what I've stated here, and vote for Sarah Palin and John McCain because of those very reasons. And, if you truly want to see our nation end abortion and take a step in the right direction, I humbly suggest you make the same choice.

Jarrod,

Greetings! i believe you are a friend of Clayton's, and we had a discussion similar to this before. i assure you however, i do think about other things besides politics. lol. so please pardon the circumstances in which our last discussion ended. i have no intention to an extended debate/discussion etc... i merely would like make a couple of remarks and pose a few questions.

1. i am troubled by your first argument. (ill grant the first premise for arguments sake) you seem to say that if we are in right standing with God (p), then we will have a secure border/economy (q). however, lets put it this way, ~ q -> ~P... logically you would have to say that if our economy is bad then we are not in a right standing before God. this does not seem to be the case though (certainly not the Biblical case! most Christians were poor!). i think throughout history there have been governments who have made just and righteous policy, while still struggled economically and defensively, do you not agree? so if that is the case, then just policy will not give our country economic stability. though i see your point. my point is simply, God does not grant economic prosperity if a certain requirement is met. that leads me into my second remark.

2. most democrats (that i know anyway) would completely agree with voting on moral issues only. the thing is, they see the economy and foreign relations AS moral issues. that is, those starving in Africa, or the poor here in America as moral issues stemming from economic and foreign policy problems.

so my question would be, why do you not see economic and foreign relations as moral/ justice issues? Scripture, to my understanding (i could be wrong), does see those things as moral (love God and love neighbor... not to mention the indictment against Israel for their failure in social justice...)... i would say that Christians have a responsibility in those areas to be agents of New Creation. do you agree?

as for my last question, ill pose a hypothetical.. suppose we elect a man who is an unrighteous, unjust scoundrel, yet he continues to make moral policy, would it be warranted for a Christian to vote for him/her? similarly, suppose there was a righteous man, who was a nitwit, and could not make a right decision for anything, does a Christian have an obligation in voting for him/her?

ultimately, i agree with your conclusion, though i think, i disagree with how you got there, or why you got there. i firmly believe that economic and foreign relations ARE moral issues presented in scripture. however, that being said, there is not a Christian position on those issues, that is, a Christian could be for off-shoar drilling in order to boost the economy, yet another Christian could be for environmental conservation, and oppose off-shoar drilling... so there is not a Christian position on how to fix the economy (both want the economy to be better yet have different opinions as to how that is accomplished (democratic or republican) , or the environment, however, there is a Christian position on abortion that is a positive position. thus i do agree with you, i am simply curious as to how you reached your conclusion...

thanks for the time, i realize that (as usual) my posts tend to be rather lengthy, and i tend to ramble. so please forgive that tendency. my hope is that we can learn from each other, (as the last discussion got rather off topic and redundant) thanks again. i admire your desire to be Biblically faithful and God honoring God bless!
